The Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship offers women and nonbinary journalists who cover social justice and human rights chances for academic and professional advancement.

The Fellowship was established in honor of Elizabeth Neuffer, a Boston Globe correspondent and 1998 recipient of the IWMF Courage in Journalism Award, who passed away on May 9, 2003, while covering the war in Iraq.

The IWMF launched this program in cooperation with Neuffer’s friends and family to carry on her legacy and further her work in the social justice and human rights movements.

Female and non-binary journalists with a minimum of three years of experience in print, broadcast, or digital media, as a staff member or freelance worker, are eligible to apply for the Neuffer Fellowship.

Applications from people of all nationalities are welcome, but to fully engage in and benefit from the program, non-native English speakers must have exceptional written and spoken English skills.

Along with research and coursework at MIT’s Center for International Studies, the Fellow will do journalism internships at The New York Times and The Boston Globe. Due to the program’s adaptable framework, the fellow has the chance to develop their reporting abilities and conduct academic research.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Journalists that specialize on social justice and human rights and who identify as nonbinary or gender nonconforming are eligible to apply for the Neuffer Fellowship.
  • All candidates for the Neuffer Fellowship must be employed journalists with a minimum of three years of full-time experience in the field. Professional experience does not include work done while attending college, including internships and journalism-related projects. Journalists on employment or on contract are eligible to apply.
  • The application process is open to journalists worldwide. To fully participate in and experience the benefits of the Fellowship, however, candidates must be fluent in English in speaking, reading, and writing.

Benefits

  • The living expenses of Neuffer Fellows are paid for by a predetermined monthly stipend.
  • Additionally, the IWMF provides and pays for the fellow’s lodging in Cambridge and New York City.
  • The IWMF pays for the fellow’s round-trip economy airfare from his or her home country to the United States and for transportation between the fellowship cities.
  • Throughout the program, health insurance is provided to the fellow.
  • Salary is not provided by the Fellowship. For fellows who live abroad, the Fellowship also pays for the expenses associated with requesting and receiving a U.S. visa.
  • Any other incidental expenses and other charges are entirely the fellow’s responsibility.

Deadline for Application

The deadline for the 2025 Worldwide Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship for Women Journalists is 21st April 2024. Applicants must note that applications will not be accepted after the deadline.

  • Date Elizabeth Neuffer fellow will be selected: June 2024
  • Date Fellowship begins in Boston: February 2024
  • Date Fellows will relocate to New York for Internship at New York Times: May 2025
  • Date Fellowships end: July, 2025
