Tonumaipea was a member of Melbourne’s initial 2014 Auckland Nines team in February 2014. He made his NRL debut on the wing, at the Melbourne Storm’s 23-22 victory over Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles in the opening round of the 2014 NRL season.
Tonumaipea scored his maiden NRL try in round 3 at AAMI Park as Melbourne defeated the Newcastle Knights 28-20.
In round 6, Melbourne defeated the St. George Illawarra Dragons 28-24 despite falling behind 24-10 in the second half thanks to a try by Tonumaipea after the final siren. He was chosen to represent Samoa in the Pacific Rugby League International match against Fiji on May 3, 2014.
