Yusra Mardini was just 13 years old and lived in Damascus’ capital when her country’s revolution began. She had grown up in a warm family, leaving a normal life that included birthdays, swimming practice, attending to school, and rooftop parties with friends.

It all ended abruptly four years later, when Yusra, then 17, fled to Germany with her sister to escape the violence and bombings that began near their home and took the life of a close friend.

Yusra Mardini is now pursuing a degree in Film and Television Production at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, while also founding a philanthropic foundation in Germany and the United States to educate refugees via sports.

Yusra Mardini’s journey has powerful scenes of love, sacrifice, and trials. Viewers will see her give in to tiredness and see her grow stronger and more resolute as she reluctantly drops her most precious possession, gold medals, into the sea before rushing into the sea with her sister to lead the boat and others on board to safety.
