Yusra Mardini was named a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador on April 27, 2017, and she also competed with the Refugee Olympic Team in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo (EOR).
Yusra Mardini trained in swimming as a child in Darayya, a Damascus suburb, with the help of the Syrian Olympic Committee. She competed for Syria in the FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) in the 200-meter individual medley, 200-meter freestyle, and 400-meter freestyle events in 2012. And the Syrian Civil War destroyed Mardini’s home. In August 2015, Mardini and her sister Sara decided to depart Syria.
