After the motor failed and the dinghy began to take on water in the Aegean Sea, Yusra, Sara, and two other persons who could swim jumped into the water and pushed and pulled the boat through the water for more than three hours until the group arrived at Lesbos.
They then walked through Europe to Germany, where they settled in September 2015. Her parents and younger sister, Shaed, have also escaped Syria and are now residing in Germany.

Mervat and Shaed Mardini reside with Yusra in her apartment in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf area, while Ezzat Mardini lives nearby.
Mervat Mardini worked as a physiotherapist in Syria. And swimming has always been an important part of Ezzat Mardini’s life. So, he coached his daughters until they had to flee the country.
