Yusra Mardini is a professional swimmer born on March 5, 1998. With assistance from the Syrian Olympic Committee, Mardini received swimming instruction while growing up in Damascus’ Darayya neighbourhood.

She represented Syria in the 200-meter individual medley, 200-meter freestyle, and 400-meter freestyle events at the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m).

She competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro as a member of the Refugee Olympic Athletes Team, representing the Olympic movement (ROT). Mardini was chosen to represent the UNHCR as a goodwill ambassador on April 27, 2017.

As a member of the Refugee Olympic Team, she took part in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.

After landing in Germany with the intention of competing in the Olympics, Mardini resumed her training in Berlin with her trainer Sven Spannenkrebs from Wasserfreunde Spandau 04. She worked hard to qualify for the 200-meter freestyle swimming contest.
