Yusra Mardini is a Syrian refugee, and Olympic swimmer, she was appointed as the UNHCR’s youngest-ever Goodwill Ambassador in April 2017. In 2015, Yusra and Sara Mardini left the war-torn nation of Syria in an effort to travel to Europe and secure refugee status for the rest of their family.
The two sisters’ exceptional swimming abilities were instrumental in saving the lives of 18 other refugees when their overloaded dinghy started sinking in the Aegean Sea. On the Greek island of Lesbos, the two spent hours swimming while still connected to the boat in an effort to save everyone.
