Curtis James Jackson III (born July 6, 1975) is an American rapper, actor, and businessman best known as 50 Cent. 50 Cent has been described as a “master of the nuanced art of lyrical brevity” for his influence in the hip-hop industry.

Jackson started out rapping over instrumentals on turntables in a friend’s basement. Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC, who was starting Jam Master Jay Records in 1996, was introduced to him by a friend. 50 Cent learned from Jay how to make records, write choruses, organize songs, and count bars.

Jackson made his debut on the song “React” for Onyx’s 1998 album Shut ‘Em Down. Jackson credited Jam Master Jay, who also produced Jackson’s debut (unreleased) album, with helping him get better at writing hooks.

Jackson was signed to Columbia Records in 1999 by platinum-selling producers Trackmasters after 50 Cent parted ways with Jam Master Jay.

They took him to a studio in upstate New York, where 50 Cent wrote 36 songs in two weeks, 18 of which appeared on his Power of the Dollar album from 2000. Jackson and Bang ‘Em Smurf, a former member of G-Unit, established Hollow Point Entertainment.
