He was known as a “master of silence,” and his unequaled kind of pantomime had the ability to move audiences without the use of a single word.

The dance Candide (1971) and the mime-drama Don Juan are only two of the many original performances Marceau has produced (1964).

Marceau also created almost 100 pantomimes, such as The Creation of the Earth. In 1978, he was chosen to be the director of the École de Mimodrame Marcel Marceau.

Alain Marceau was Marcel Marceau’s elder brother.

Marcel and Alain chose the last name “Marceau” in remembrance of François Séverin Marceau-Desgraviers, a general of the French Revolution, during the German occupation of France. They joined the French Resistance in Limoges.

They aided the Jewish Resistance in France in rescuing numerous kids from detention camps and racial prejudice. They enlisted in the French army following the liberation of Paris.
