The first same-sex marriage license in the country was granted by Clela Rorex, who lived from 1943 to 2022. In 1975, Rorex, who was the Boulder County Clerk, granted a gay couple a marriage license following clearance from the District Attorney.

On a Methodist scholarship, Rorex went to the University of Colorado.

She then got married to a navy officer and lived with him for three years when he was stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, before moving back to Boulder.

When incumbent Henry Putnam announced his retirement, Rorex decided to run for Boulder county clerk after spending a few summers working in her father’s office.

She made the decision to run after hearing Democratic Party members say they “needed a man” to run against the female Republican candidate at a gathering.

Rorex discussed her displeasure at hearing this with other members of a feminist group she was a part of before deciding to run herself. In 1975, at the age of 31, she was chosen and sworn in.

The sheriff’s office had to remove Henry Putnam because he wouldn’t leave the workplace.
