As part of the government’s lockdown initiative Minister for Gender and Social Protection, Madam Cynthia Morrison has announced plans to cater to the pertinent needs of the poor and vulnerable in the society.

At a press briefing today April 1, 2020, organized by the Information Ministry, the Gender Minister said about 1,500 head porters (Kayayeis) have been taken off the street.

According to her, these Kayeyeis will be given decent accommodation, food, water, and daily stipends.

“Some of them have rented apartments and we have those who also live on the streets. We have visited some facilities where we think can accommodate our brothers and sisters on the streets and those without places of abode during the lockdown.

“We currently have 1,500 ‘kayayei’ to cater for. For those who have their apartment, we will find ways of sending logistics to them, to keep them away from coming to town. And for those that we are going to keep, there’s going to be enough food, water… We have corporate bodies cooking for like 6,000…” she told the media.

She added that twenty mentally-handicapped individuals will be picked and isolated for proper grooming while the rest on the streets will be fed twice daily.

This comes as a relief to some concerned Ghanaians who were not happy about the sheer exclusion of these people from the lockdown policy.

Ghana’s Coronavirus count is at 195 with 5 deaths.
