He participated in bandy and ice hockey, when he was young, before he decided to follow his uncle’s footsteps and pursue a career in medicine while he was still in high school. As the Soviet Union retook control of Latvia in 1944, his family left for Germany.

Nagobads was focused on the diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases, particularly hepatitis C. In 1987, he found the Michigan Liver Foundation, which was a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting liver health through education and research.
