Guy Lafleur, the renowned hockey player, had been battling lung cancer for some time and has finally passed away. Guy Lafleur, the quick-skating Canadiens winger whose scoring prowess helped maintain Montreal’s NHL dynasty in the 1970s, died April 22 at a palliative care centre in a Montreal suburb.
He was 70 years old.
Lise Lafleur, his sister, reported his death on Facebook but did not provide further details. “A almost three-year fight with cancer,” according to an NHL obituary. In 2019, Mr. Lafleur underwent quadruple bypass surgery; physicians later excised part of a lung, and he developed lung cancer again in 2020.
Mr. Lafleur “was unlike anybody else on the rink,” said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Twitter, adding that “he inspired countless Quebecers, Canadians, and hockey fans across the world.”
