Mikhail was born on March 2, 1931, and passed away on August 30, 2022. As the leader of the country from 1988 until 1991, he held the positions of Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet from 1988 until 1989, Chairman of the Supreme Soviet from 1989 until 1990, General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991, and President of the Soviet Union from 1990 until the country’s dissolution in 1991.

Mikhail also served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991. In terms of ideology, Gorbachev was an early supporter of Marxism and Leninism, but by the early 1990s, he had shifted his allegiance to social democracy.

How did Mikhail Gorbachev die?

After a “severe and prolonged illness,” Gorbachev passed away on 30 August 2022 at the age of 91 at Moscow’s Central Clinical Hospital, where he had been continuously monitored by doctors since the start of 2020.

As per his will, Gorbachev will be laid to rest in Moscow’s Novodevichy Cemetery next to his wife Raisa, who passed away in 1999.

In terms of Russian leaders, Gorbachev outlived both Alexander Kerensky and Vasily Kuznetsov, the nominal head of the USSR, who both died at age 89.
