On February 12th, 1934, he was born, and on July 31st, 2022, he passed away. He was a professional player from 1956 to 1969.

During his 13-year stint, the Celtics dynasty was built around him, and went on to win 11 NBA championships. He received five NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors and twelve NBA All-Star nods.

Russell is regarded by experts as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. In addition to coaching the American basketball team to a gold medal in the men’s category at the 1956 Summer Olympics, he also led the San Francisco Dons to back-to-back NCAA titles in 1955 and 1956.

Russell won 11 championships over his 13 years in the NBA, more than any other player in league history (1957, 1959–66, and 1968–69).

For good measure, if he hadn’t been forced to miss the opening stages of the 1958 NBA finals due to an ankle ailment, he might have won 12 championships.

This was a good accomplishment to put on his resume. Red Auerbach, Bird’s coach and a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, called him “the single most devastating force in the history of the game.” Bird led the Celtics to 11 titles throughout his time with the team, which he oversaw.
