For his outstanding performance in the ring, especially his two victories over the esteemed Cuban boxer Teofilo Stevenson, Vysotsky won respect and admiration. Three-time Olympic champion Stevenson ruled the boxing world in the 1970s and 1980s. Out of more than 200 opponents, only Vysotsky had ever defeated Stevenson.
That battle stands out in particular because Vysotsky stunned Stevenson by knocking him out in the third round after being down twice. One of three Soviet boxers who took on famous American boxer Muhammad Ali was Vysotsky.
