On Comedy Central’s list of the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time, Murphy is placed No. 10 and has performed stand-up comedy.

For his roles in 48 Hrs. (1982), the Beverly Hills Cop series (1984–present), Trading Places (1983), The Nutty Professor (1996), and Dolemite Is My Name, Murphy has won Golden Globe Award nominations (2019). He has received multiple honors for his contributions to the 1998 fantasy comedy Dr. Dolittle and its 2001 sequel.

Murphy has voiced characters such as the Chinese dragon Mushu in Disney’s Mulan (1998), Thurgood Stubbs in The PJs (1999-2001), and Donkey in DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek franchise (2001–2010). He plays many roles in certain films, in addition to his primary character, as a tribute to one of his inspirations, Peter Sellers.

Eddie Murphy’s grandfather, like many others on this list, was Irish. He joins the likes of Dennis Leary, Conan O’Brien, Bill Maher, Bill Murray, George Carlin, and the late, great Robin Williams in having Irish origins. He is said to have Irish ancestors through a grandfather.
