Elvira is an American actress, writer, and singer. She is best known as the horror hostess character Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, the popularity of Elvira’s Movie Macabre led to the 1988 film Elvira: Mistress of the Dark.
She was born Cassandra Gay Peterson on September 17, 1951. As a child, she was intrigued by horror-themed dolls and watched her first horror film House on Haunted Hill in elementary school. After high school, she moved to Las Vegas and became a showgirl. In 1971, she got a minor role in the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever.
In 1981, Peterson was offered the role of Elvira, she dressed in a tight-fitting, low-cut, cleavage-displaying black gown which soon became her signature look. The show soon became a fan favorite and she became a brand ambassador for many products including Halloween costumes, comic books, and action figures. Following the success of the show a feature film was made, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, and a 2001 comedy Elvira’s Haunted Hills.
