Jack the Ripper was an unidentified serial killer active in the impoverished districts in and around Whitechapel in the East End of London in 1888. He usually killed female prostitutes who lived and worked in the slums of the East End of London. He was known to cut the throats of his victims and the removal of internal organs from at least three of the victims led to proposals that the killer had some surgical knowledge.

It is believed the murders started on April 3, 1888, to February 13, 1891. His victims are Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly. Some of his victims were badly mutilated, leaving a very graphic murder scene. A large team of policemen from Scotland Yard conducted house-to-house inquiries throughout Whitechapel and collected forensic material.

Over 76 butchers and slaughterers were investigated, there was profiling of Jack the Ripper, and some thought the killer was an educated upper-class man, possibly a doctor who ventured into Whitechapel from a more well-to-do area. In the course of the murder, the authorities received hundreds of letters claimed to have been written by the killer himself, yet the killer was never found.
