John was born on April 8, 1949, in Portsmouth, England. He studied English Literature at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. He started his career directing Helen Mirren in the British drama Prime Suspect.
He went on to direct some episodes of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes in 1984. In 1998, he directed Shakespeare in Love and won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
