Pablo Escobar was a Colombian drug lord and narcoterrorist who was the founder and sole leader of the Medellín Cartel. Escobar is the wealthiest criminal in history, having amassed an estimated net worth of US$30 billion. He was at the peak of his illegal business in the 1990s.

Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was born on December 1, 1949, as the third child of seven children. He started his crimes in 1966 after dropping out of high school by stealing tombstones, sandblasting their inscriptions, and reselling them. He moved up to car theft, he also kidnapped a businessman Diego Echavarria and was eventually killed in the summer of 1971. Escobar received a $50,000 ransom from the Echavarria family.

Escobar went into cocaine smuggling in the mid-1970s. Between 1978 and 1980, his cartel was the only one supplying cocaine to the United States and was making millions of dollars daily. At the peak of his crime, he was elected to the Colombian Congress in 1982 but had to resign just two years later because of his crimes.
