Pierluigi Collina was born in Bologna, where he also attended college and earned an economics degree in 1984. Collina was a centre-back for a local team when he was a teenager, but was persuaded to enrol in a referee course in 1977. It was then that it was discovered he had a special aptitude for the position. Within three years, Collina had finished his conscription and was officiating at the highest level of regional competition.
