Pierluigi advanced quickly in the refereeing ranks, officiating for significant regional matches after three years, then third-tier national matches, before swiftly being promoted to first-tier national matches after just three seasons. Pierluigi Collina became a FIFA referee in the middle of the 1990s, and he later officiated important games like the 2002 World Cup Final, UEFA Champions League Final, and the Athens Olympics. After officiating the Euro 2004 Pierluigi Collina retired in 2005. Pierluigi was occasionally charged with being too lenient with some teams and too tough on others, proving that his refereeing was not impervious to controversy.
