Former football referee Pierluigi Collina was born in Italy on February 13, 1960. The best football referee of all time, Pierluigi received FIFA’s “Best Referee of the Year” award six times in a row. Collina is still active in football as a member of the UEFA Referees Committee, Head of Referees for the Football Federation of Ukraine since 2010, an unpaid consultant for the Italian Football Referees Association (AIA), and Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee.
Collina was born in Bologna and graduated from the University of Bologna in 1984 with a degree in economics. During his adolescence, Pierluigi was a centre-back for a local team, but in 1977, Pierluigi was persuaded to take a referee’s course, where it was discovered that he had a special aptitude for the job. Within three years, Pierluigi was officiating at the highest level of regional matches while also serving his mandatory military service. In 1988, he advanced more quickly than usual to the national third division, Serie C1 and Serie C2. After three seasons, Pierluigi was promoted to officiate Serie B and Serie A matches.
