Stephen Michael Gleason is an American former professional football player who played as a safety with the New Orleans Saints.

He is remembered for his block of a punt early in a 2006 game, which became a symbol of hope in New Orleans in the team’s first home game after Hurricane Katrina.

Steve Gleason was born on March 19, 1977. He started playing football in high school.

He continued to Washington State where he was a starter for 4 years. In November 2000, he signed for New Orleans Saints.

In 2006, Gleason blocked a punt by Atlanta Falcons punter Michael Koenen early in the first quarter of a game at the Superdome.

It was Saint’s first goal after 21 months during which time Hurricane Katrina had devastated the city and the team.

In 2011, Gleason was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), he has chronicled his struggles in a documentary the 2016 documentary Gleason. He has also raised funds for research and awareness of ALS.
