Anna Mae Bullock was born on November 26, 1939, in Brownsville, Tennessee. Tina began singing in church.
Tina met Ike Turner at a Nightclub and was invited to sing with his band in 1957.
Ike taught her how to control her vocals and how to perform. Ike renamed her from Anna Bullock to Tina Turner and trademarked the name.
Tina released A Fool In Love in July 1960 and it became No. 2 on the R&B chart and No. 27 on Billboard Hot 100. Tina and Ike had a successful music career but their marriage was filled with physical and drug abuse. In 1976, Tina filed for a divorce.
Turner left the marriage retaining her trademarked name. At age 44, she was the oldest female solo artist to top the Hot 100 with hits like Private Dancer and Better Be Good to Me. She won a Grammy for Album of the year for What’s Love Got To Do.
