South Africa’s Queenstown is where Sono was born and reared. His father, Eric Bhamuza Sono, who in the 1960s played midfield for the Orlando Pirates football team, died in a car accident when he was only 8 years old. Soon after, his mother left him.

Sono was then left in charge of his old and in need of financial help grandparents. Sono had to sell apples and peanuts at sporting events and train stations to support himself and his grandmother.

Among Jomo’s four children are Bamuza Sono, a player for the South African national football team, and his second son, Matsilela Junior. Jomo Sono is married and has a total of four children.
