In an effort to capitalize on his impressive victory over Lamon Brewster, Helenius agreed to face Samuel Peter, another former heavyweight champion. Peter had just suffered a devastating knockout loss to Wladimir Klitschko, the undisputed heavyweight champion, in their highly anticipated rematch. The altercation happened on April 2, 2011.
Peter entered the fight with vigour, launching a steady barrage of body and head blows. However, Helenius persevered and soon started to land his signature right-hand hits in the middle rounds. But, Helenius ended the fight with a hard knockout, knocking Peter out cold on the canvas for far over the 10-second count as the fight entered the ninth round.
