Keith Levene, a founding member of The Clash and later guitarist for Public Image Ltd, has died at the age of 65, according to a close friend. According to author Adam Hammond, Levene, who died on Friday, was one of the most influential guitarists of all time.
Levene co-founded The Clash with Mick Jones in the 1970s but left before they became successful. After leaving the Sex Pistols, he joined Public Image Ltd (PiL), John Lydon’s post-punk band.
During his time with The Clash, Levene was instrumental in convincing frontman Joe Strummer to leave his previous band, The 101ers, and join them.
Levene is credited with helping to pioneer an angular post-punk sound that is still widely referenced while working with Public Image Ltd.
Levene left Public Image Ltd in 1983, before the band’s resurgence in the mid-1980s, which saw them return to the top 10 twice, but he continued to co-write with them.
Keith later relocated to Los Angeles, where he worked with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and a number of hip-hop acts.
