Levene was born on July 18, 1957, in the Muswell Hill neighbourhood of London. His father was of Jewish ancestry. Keith Levene began his music career at the age of fifteen, touring with the progressive rock band Yes on their Close to the Edge tour.

Keith Levene became a founding member of both The Clash and The Flowers of Romance in 1976.

It was Levene’s responsibility to influence Joe Strummer’s decision to leave the 101ers and join the Clash. Despite leaving The Clash before they began recording, Keith Levene was a co-writer on the song “What’s My Name,” which appeared on their debut album.

After the breakup of the British punk band, Sex Pistols in the late 1970s, Levene and the band’s lead vocalist John Lydon formed Public Image Ltd. In his performances, he used Travis Bean metal-neck guitars.

Keith Levene played on and produced early PiL albums such as First Issue, Metal Box, and Flowers of Romance. Levene left PiL in 1983 due to creative differences with the band’s upcoming fourth album, This Is What You Want… This is exactly what you get.

Keith Levene released the original versions of the songs on his own label in 1984 under the title Commercial Zone, which was the album’s working title at the time. Commercial Zone was also the album’s working title when it was first recorded.
