Jones was born on August 19, 1927, in Beaumont, Texas, to Jessie Paralee (Stephens) and railroad worker Justus Ellis McQueen Sr.

In 1931, in an automobile accident, his mother passed away in a hospital. Jones attended Lamar Junior College and Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas, then the University of Texas at Austin from 1950 to 1951 after serving in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1946.

He performed stand-up comedy, dabbled in professional football and baseball for a while, and even tried his hand at ranching in Nicaragua before deciding to pursue acting after getting in touch with his former college roommate, Fess Parker.
