Applewhite attended a number of universities and enlisted in the US Army when he was still a young man. He initially thought about a future in education before leaving the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, in 1970. Applewhite had “mental instability” as his justification.

A former religious member of the Heavens Gate society was born to Marshall Herff Applewhite Sr, his father who was a Presbyterian minister and Louise Applewhite, his mother, a homemaker. His father passed away in the year 1971 whiles his mother passed away in 1988. His parents also had three children aside from Marshall Applewhite Jr., named John, Stella and Anne Applewhite.
