Nic Naitanui, an Australian rules football player with the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL), was born on May 4, 1990. He goes by Nicholas Mark Naitanui in full. His parents, who were from Fiji, moved the family to Perth, Western Australia after his father passed away. He was born in Sydney. Naitanui attended Governor Stirling Senior High School and played football for the Midvale Junior Football Club while growing up in Midvale.

After competing for Western Australia in the AFL Under 18 Championships in 2007 and 2008, he made his West Australian Football League (WAFL) debut in 2008 for the Swan Districts Football Club. With the second overall pick in the 2008 National Draft, West Coast chose Naitanui.

Naitanui made his AFL debut for West Coast against Richmond in round 12 of the 2009 season. He participated in ten games during his rookie campaign and received one vote for the Brownlow Medal for a three-goal win over Hawthorn.

In his second season, Naitanui participated in every game, primarily taking the place of Mark Seaby, the backup ruckman for Dean Cox, who had been moved the previous season. Despite being the preseason favourite to win the AFL Rising Star award, Naitanui came in fifth overall.
