Macdonald was a Canadian stand-up comedian, actor and writer who was known universally for his style of humour and interjecting poetic and occasionally old-fashioned turns of phrase.

He was born and raised in Quebec City, Quebec to Ferne (née Mains) and Percy Lloyd Macdonald on October 17, 1959. Both his parents were teachers. Macdonald was married to Connie Vaillancourt in 1988, the couple separated in 1999.

They had a son Dylan Macdonald. He had an older brother, Neil Macdonald, who is a journalist with CBC News and a younger brother named Leslie.

Later, Macdonald was briefly enrolled in Algonquin College’s programs for journalism and broadcasting television and did a variety of manual labour jobs in between periods of school and before starting in comedy.

He began his first performances in comedy at stand-up clubs in Ottawa, often coming up on amateur nights at Yuk Yuks in 1985. His first performance did not go well for him, and he got discouraged saying, he would never do it again.

The owner of the club, Howard Wagman, had to convince him to come back. Finally, his confidence grew. Six months later he performed at the 1986 Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, and he was praised by the Montreal Gazette as “one of this country’s hottest comics.

By 1990, he performed as a contestant on Star Search. He also appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, and the host became a huge fan, saying: “If we could have, we would have had Norm on every week”.

He was hired as a writer for the television sitcom Roseanne and The Dennis Miller Show. before resigning to join Saturday Night Live. He appeared in multiple films during his career.

In 1993, Macdonald appeared as a cast member on Saturday Night Live (SNL), for a total of five seasons, which involved anchoring the show’s Weekend Update segment for three and a half seasons.

After being fired from SNL, he wrote and starred in the 1998 film Dirty Work and headlined his sitcom The Norm Show from 1999 to 2001. Macdonald was also a voice actor and gave voice acting roles for Family Guy, Mike Tyson Mysteries, The Orville, and the Dr Dolittle films.

During 2013 and 2018, Macdonald was a host of the talk shows Norm Macdonald Live (a video podcast). Macdonald has a Show (a Netflix series), on which he interviewed comedians and other celebrities.

In 2016, he wrote a novel based on a fictionalized account of his life. Macdonald died at 61 on September 14, 2021, in Pasadena, California, U.S. He was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2012.
