Ptolemy XIV Philopator (Greek: o, Ptolemaios; circa 59 – 44 BC) was a Pharaoh of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. He reigned from 47 until his death in 44 BC. Ptolemy XIV Philopator was also known as Ptolemy XIV Philopatros.
After the death of their older brother Ptolemy XIII of Egypt on January 13, 47 BC, and in accordance with the will that he left behind, their older sister Cleopatra VII of Egypt proclaimed him Pharaoh and co-ruler of Egypt.
He reigned alongside her for the remainder of her reign. When he became king, he did it at the age of approximately 12 years old. Cleopatra, his older sister, was married to him, but she did not stop having sexual relations with Julius Caesar, who was the dictator of Rome at the time.
Ptolemy is thought to have only ruled in name, as a concession to Egyptian custom, with Cleopatra maintaining actual authority over Egypt during their time together.
Caesar was assassinated at Rome on March 15, 44 BC by a gang of conspirators, the most important members of which were Brutus and Cassius.
Ptolemy passed away not long after his father. An inscription dated to 26 July 44 BC mentioned him as still being alive at that time.
It has been assumed, but it is still unknown, that Cleopatra poisoned her co-ruler with aconite in order to replace him with his nephew Ptolemy XV Caesar. Ptolemy XV Caesar was Cleopatra’s son by Caesar and was proclaimed co-ruler on 2 September 44 BC. His mother intended to support him as the successor of his father.

Ptolemy XIV went back to Egypt in March 44 B.C., after Caesar was killed in that year’s civil war. Soon after that, Ptolemy XIV passed away, most likely as a result of Cleopatra poisoning him, and the queen named her son Ptolemy XV Caesar her co-ruler along with herself.
