Robin Marlar played first-class cricket for Sussex between 1951 and 1968 as well as Cambridge University, where he captained the team to victories over Oxford in 1951, 1952, and 1953, earning him a blue in each year. Marlar was a creative off-break bowler who recorded 970 wickets at an impressive average of 25.22 in 289 games, with a personal best of 9/46 against Lancashire at Hove in 1955. During the years 1955 to 1959, Marlar led Sussex as a “shrewd and skillful” captain. Currently, he holds this position alongside only five other native-born cricketers.

Robin Marlar enjoyed a fruitful career as a journalist and authored the illustrated history The Story of Cricket. Marlar was an outspoken cricket correspondent for The Sunday Times (1979).
