Rivera detected a bump on his neck while shaving and was diagnosed with cancer in August. In September, he began a seven-week radiation and chemotherapy program that included 35 proton treatments.
Though he continued to coach during treatment, he was noticeably thinner and leaner and had to alter his schedule to incorporate hospital visits, naps between meetings, and days off when he was too exhausted to manage the squad. Jack Del Rio filled in for him at three sessions, although he didn’t miss any games. He later announced that he has been treated and cancer free now.
