After spending his first year in Tuscaloosa redshirting, Kelly joined the team in 2012 and started 10 games at center, filling in for the All-American senior Barrett Jones. Amari Cooper and T. J. Yeldon were also selected for the SEC All-Freshman team, along with Kelly. In his second season, Kelly replaced Jones as the starter, calling plays on an offensive line that was fourth in the SEC and 23rd nationally for fewest sacks allowed per game (1.31). Jordan Hicks and Kelly were teammates at Lakota West High School in West Chester, Ohio. He was a first-team all-conference and all-city selection on the offensive line in 2009 as a junior.
