Kinugasa twice qualified for the Japanese National High School Baseball Championship while playing catcher in his senior year at Kyoto’s Heian High School. After being signed by the Hiroshima Carp in 1965, he spent some time playing in the minor leagues before being moved to first base in 1968 due to an arm problem.
Tetsujin, which is Japanese for “Iron Man,” was Kinugasa’s given name. In 1987, he surpassed Lou Gehrig’s mark for the most straight games played (2,215) before breaking it.
Kinugasa was given the People’s Honour Award for his work in the professional leagues. Before Shigeo Nagashima and Hideki Matsui, and after Sadaharu Oh, he is the second baseball player to receive the accolade.
