Shoichiro Toyoda was born in Nagoya, the son of Kiichiro Toyoda, the founder of Toyota Motors, and Iida Shinshichi, a co-founder of the Takashimaya department store group. Sakichi Toyoda, the founder of the Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, was his grandfather.
He was the chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation from 1992 to 1999. He presided over the esteemed Japan Business Federation from 1994 to 1998. Toyota approved the development of the Prius hybrid and the Lexus brand under Toyoda’s guidance.
The founder of the business, Toyoda, engaged his son to work for Toyota Motors in 1952. In ten years, he had risen to the post of managing director. He was given the titles of executive vice president, senior managing director, and head of the company’s marketing division in 1972.
The production and sales divisions were combined in 1982, at which point Toyota Motor Corporation was formed. Toyoda served as the new organization’s inaugural president.
Toyoda’s forward-thinking leadership made it feasible for the luxurious Lexus brand and the eco-friendly Prius engine electric hybrids to enter the global popular culture.
