A wartime English nurse is sent for just two weeks to a destitute Irish village in The Wonder’s 1800s setting to watch and observe a kid. The head of the deeply devout sect claims that the young girl, Anna (played by Kila Lord Cassidy), hasn’t eaten anything in four months. The medical practitioner tasked with the observation, Lib Wright (Florence Pugh), doesn’t believe a word of it.

Anna and the rest of her family practice religion, and Lib later finds out that Anna has a deep dread that her brother, who passed away nine months before, is in hell.

Lib hears Anna uttering prayers that she has been told will aid in releasing her brother’s soul from purgatory as she is making her observations. Additionally, she discovers that communion was Anna’s last meal, which heightens the fervour of religion in the area.

Lib starts to push a feeding tube down Anna’s throat out of desperation but stops just in time. She implores Anna to eat, but Anna smiles and declines.

Lib finally understands how she has been surviving during their good night and good morning kiss, her mother has been feeding her chewed-up food, much like a mother bird does for her chick.
