Australian featherweight boxer Johnny Famechon was born Jean-Pierre Famechon on March 28, 1945. In the French capital of Paris, Famechon was born. After being inducted into the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame’s Moderns category in 2003, Famechon was given Legend status in 2012.

At the age of five, he and his parents, older brother, and mother moved from Paris to Ferntree Gully, Victoria, Australia. The household then moved to Middle Park, another Melbourne neighbourhood. John and his father Andre followed his mother Antoinette and younger brother Christian to Paris a few years later.

 

His achievements are still widely respected, and the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame inducted Famechon as a Legend in 2012.

 

Famechon now has a bronze statue in his hometown of Frankston, becoming the third Australian boxer, after Les Darcy and Lionel Rose, to receive such recognition.

 

In the 2022 Queen’s Birthday Honours, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his outstanding contributions to boxing at the highest level.

 

What happened to Johnny Famechon?

 

In a statement released on Thursday, the Sport Australia Hall of Fame reported Famechon’s passing. Famechon suffered a stroke and an acquired brain injury after being hit by a car while jogging in Sydney in 1991.
