George Nagobads, who served as the team medic for the 1980 U.S. men’s hockey Olympic team and is a member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, was born on November 18, 1921, and passed away on March 31, 2023, at the age of 101, according to USA Hockey and the University of Minnesota.

Nagobads served as the squad doctor for the American men’s hockey team in 1968, 1972, 1980, 1984, and 1988. He’s best known for serving as Herb Brooks’ assistant during the 1980 Lake Placid Games. Nagobads also worked as the University of Minnesota’s men’s team physician from 1958 to 1992.

He was the team doctor for the 1990 women’s world title, in which Canada defeated the United States in the championship match. He left his home in Latvia and immigrated to the US in the early 1950s after earning his medical degree in Germany.

In 2010, the American Hockey Hall of Fame recognized Negobads. Nagobads received the Paul Loicq Award from the International Ice Hockey Federation in 2003, which is awarded to people who have “outstanding contributions to the IIHF and international hockey.”
