Her father could trace his Italian lineage back to Genoa, Venice, and Abruzzo, and her mother was born in Fornelli, Isernia, Molise in South Italy and immigrated to the United States in 1912. Her father, a Democratic congressman from Maryland, was present when Nancy was born. Afterward, he was elected mayor of Baltimore. Pelosi’s mother was also involved in politics, bringing together Democratic women and educating her daughter about the power of social media. Baltimore’s mayor from 1967 to 1971 was Pelosi’s brother, Thomas D’Alesandro III, a fellow Democrat.\
After relocating to San Francisco, Pelosi made acquaintances with Phillip Burton, a congressman from California’s 5th district, and started climbing the Democratic political ladder. She was chosen to represent California on the Democratic National Committee in 1976; she served in this capacity until 1996. She was chosen to lead the California Democratic Party for four years, from 1977 to 1983, after being elected as the region’s party chair for Northern California.
