Thomas D’Alesandro Jr., a prominent longstanding politician who was a part of the D’Alesandro political dynasty, was the father of Pelosi. From 1981 to 1983, she served as the California Democratic Party’s chairwoman before being elected to Congress. Pelosi was chosen for Congress in a special election in 1987, and she is currently serving her 18th term.
After the Republican Party gained control of the House in the 2010 elections, Pelosi lost her position as speaker in 2011. Despite this, she kept her position as head of the House Democratic Caucus and reverted to her previous position as leader of the House minority. After losing control of the House in the 2014 midterm elections, the Democrats took it back in 2018.
