To an Italian-American family, Pelosi was born in Baltimore. She was the youngest and the only daughter of Thomas D’Alesandro Jr. and Annunciata M. “Nancy” D’Alesandro (née Lombardi). Her mother was born in Fornelli, Isernia, Molise, South Italy, and immigrated to the United States in 1912; her father had Italian heritage that could be traced to Genoa, Venice, and Abruzzo. Nancy’s father was a Democratic congressman from Maryland when she was born. Seven years later, he was elected Baltimore’s mayor. Additionally involved in politics, Pelosi’s mother helped unite Democratic women and taught her daughter the advantages of social media. From 1967 until 1971, Pelosi’s brother Thomas D’Alesandro III, a fellow Democrat, served as mayor of Baltimore.

Pelosi started being interested in politics at a young age.

She helped her father’s political activities. When John F. Kennedy was inaugurated as president in January 1961, she attended his inauguration speech.

Pelosi earned her diploma from Baltimore’s Institute of Notre Dame, a Catholic secondary school for only female students, in 1958. Her political science Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College in Washington, D.C., was awarded to her in 1962. Together with future House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Pelosi worked as an intern for Maryland senator Daniel Brewster in the 1960s.
