Her mother was born in Fornelli, Isernia, Molise, South Italy, and immigrated to the United States in 1912; her father had Italian heritage that could be traced to Genoa, Venice, and Abruzzo. Nancy’s father was a Democratic congressman from Maryland when she was born. Seven years later, he was elected Baltimore’s mayor. Additionally involved in politics, Pelosi’s mother helped unite Democratic women and taught her daughter the advantages of social media. From 1967 until 1971, Pelosi’s brother Thomas D’Alesandro III, a fellow Democrat, served as mayor of Baltimore.
