British great Phil Read was Born in the large Bedfordshire town of Luton on 1 January 1939, Read is notable for being the first competitor to win world championships in the 125 ccs, 250 ccs, and 500 cc classes. Although he was often overshadowed by his contemporary, Mike Hailwood, he won seven FIM Grand Prix road racing world championships. In 2013, Read was named an FIM Legend for his motorcycling achievements.

Where Is Phil Read Now?

Read, who competed in the world championship from 1961 to 1976, was a seven-times world champion and an eight-times winner at the Isle of Man TT races, died on 6 October 2022, aged 83, Read became Yamaha’s first world champion in 1964 on a 250cc bike and took four more titles with the Japanese manufacturer. He won the 500cc championships in 1973 and 1974 with the Italian brand MV Agusta.

During the mid-1960s Yamaha had prolific riders in reading, Canadian Mike Duff and later Bill Ivy. In 1964, Read gave Yamaha its first world title when he won the 250cc class. Phil would repeat as champion the following year. In 1966, Yamaha would introduce a new, four-cylinder 250cc bike.
