In March 2022, Irish professional boxer Michael John Conlan (born 19 November 1991) made a run at the WBA (Regular) featherweight crown. He won a gold medal at the 2015 World Championships and a bronze at the 2012 Olympics en route to becoming the top amateur bantamweight in the world. He was one of Ireland’s greatest amateur fighters in history. After having reservations about amateur sports, he turned professional in 2016 and competed for the first time in 2017.

Conlan is a three-time Irish national flyweight champion and won his first Ulster novice title when he was 11 years old. After receiving a bye in the first round, he defeated Ghanaian boxer Duke Micah in his opening bout at the 2012 Olympics. He won the quarterfinal match by a score of 22-18 over French boxer Nordine Oubaali, securing himself a bronze medal. Conlan was defeated by Cuban Robeisy Ramrez in the semifinals; Ramrez went on to win the gold medal in the final.

Conlan won a silver medal at the 2013 European Championships in Minsk after competing in the Olympics, but he fell short to Welsh boxer Andrew Selby by a score of 1:2.
