Robert Ripley founded the American chain Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, which specializes in bizarre events and objects that are so strange and outlandish that readers might doubt the claims. Over 100,000 cartoon panels, 20,000 photos, 30,000 artifacts, and other items make up the Ripley collection. Champs and Chumps was the original title of Ripley’s cartoon feature, which he originally titled, and which made its debut in The New York Globe on December 19, 1918. Lester Byck was one of the other authors and researchers.
Ripley relocated to the New York American in 1930, where he was quickly picked up by the King Features Syndicate and syndicated globally. Paul Frehm (1938–1978; he became the full-time artist in 1949) and his brother Walter Frehm (1948–1989), who initially collaborated with his brother Paul on a part-time basis before becoming a full-time Ripley artist from 1978 to 1989, continued to work on the syndicated newspaper panel after Ripley’s death.
