An experienced American jurist, William Muecke Barker is most recognized for his tenure as the Tennessee Supreme Court’s chief justice from 1995 to 2009.

Barker graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1967 with a Juris Doctor degree. He joined private practice until 1983 after serving a brief time in the United States Army Medical Corps.

Barker was appointed to the bench that year by Governor Lamar Alexander, and he later served on the Tennessee Supreme Court. On October 4, 2005, he was chosen as chief justice by his peers.

Under the terms of the “Tennessee Plan,” Barker and the other justices were up for reelection in an election in August 2006, and by a large margin, he was given an additional eight years.

In addition to receiving “Distinguished Alumnus” honors from his law school and undergraduate institution, Barker was also named a “Significant Sig” by his fraternity in 2006.

On April 3, 2023, William M. Barker died naturally at the age of 81.
